As Susannah’s car crossed over the bridge into Twin Harbors early Sunday afternoon, Malcolm had the uneasy feeling he was being taken for a ride. The girls had surprised him, arriving unannounced while he’d been away with Cara for the weekend. It was Leah’s second time coming home in a month, and when Malcolm began to inquire about that, Susannah fixed him in the rearview mirror and said, “We’ll talk when we get to the diner. But not about your . . . trip, Dad. We don’t really want to know.”

“The hell we don’t.” Leah punched her sister in the arm.

“Christ, Lee.” Susannah’s eyes moved in a triangle from her sister to the road ahead to Malcolm in the rearview mirror. “All I’m saying is, don’t feel like you have to get all open about it. I mean, go with your gut. And trust me, your gut will tell you to keep it to yourself.”
